I might have thought more of this book when I read it (about ten years ago) but my admiration for it has been eroded by the unwholesome devotion it inspires in so many, many others. I have been bludgeoned by this devotion so many, many times at parties, on airplanes, in hospitals. I have been ground down by the saintly tones that people use to talk about it. You might say I'm just too touchy about its touchstonement. Or if you'd rather, that I'm weary of its aura of overratedness.
