Read in January, 2009

A year's worth of episodic misadventures of a queer punk Cuban-American woman who flees Miami for New York City in the late '90s. Road is an artist as well as a writer, so the story is punctuated by lots of drawings (in a semi-realist style similar to Dan Goldman or Jaime McKelvie) of varying degrees of explicitness. The prose doesn't hold anything back, either: sex and drugs and emotional fumbling abound, although life does (slowly) get better. But narrative seems to be of less concern here than establishing Car's voice and personality as it grows stronger and more confident.
