I love the unsettled feeling this book gave me from the start. The first person narrative sets the tone right away that you might not be given information that you can really trust.
The religious diatribe was a nice thread as well- what can we truly believe?
The writing really hooked me, I was eager to find out how the rapidly insane back story connected with the characters' current issues. I could only imagine how the psychologist would have reacted to all the unhinged revelations that came pouring at him.
The protagonist was well crafted- shown to be out of step from the beginning, and the small foibles quickly grow and crack wide open until there is more of the insane than sane about George.
The best part of the insanity of this book is that much of it's not far from reality. There are people in society today who believe that evil walks amongst us, that a battle for one soul is not always metaphysical. The most terrifying thing at times to me is a person who fanatically believes in a religion or a cause to a degree that the average "believer" would deem obsessive. Yet both sides sincerely believe they are following the true path.
