it was amazing
bookshelves: audio, middle-grade, read2011, cues-library
Read from November 27 to December 08, 2011

I’m in awe of Boyce's storytelling. He voices honest and hilarious characters and works them into the most imaginative plots. Liam's larger-than-life trip in Cosmic invites the reader to explore the limits of human imagination and hubris, my favorite thing about sci-fi. And Boyce does a better job than the movie Big at exploring what a tween brain in an adult body can and can’t accomplish. Plus it has echoes of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, it's pro-video gaming, and pro-"dadliness." And the framing of the story as flashback is done so well... I kept thinking I knew exactly when the narrative was going to catch up to the present but then it kept right on going! Never stop writing Mr. Boyce.

ps It seems like he is under the radar for US readers but can I just:
School Library Journal Best Book of the Year (2010), Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize Nominee (2008), Booklist Top Ten Science Fiction/Fantasy Novels for Youth (2010), YALSA Best Fiction for Young Adults (2011), Voya Perfect Ten (2010) – All the awards!
