Well I am finding it hard to review this book considering the other reviews so maybe it is just my perceptions. One minute Laken is crashing through a windscreen and the next minute she wakes up in Ephemeral supposedly alive but in an alternate reality and being chased by a zombie type figure no less. Rescued by a mysterious stranger, she finds herself at a school she doesn't remember with a whole new life and finds out that the previous reality of Kansas was a dream who subconscious made up while she was in a coma. In Ephemeral, Laken has a sordid past from her previous school and her brother and sister and mother are here but altered versions of themselves. Wes the love of her life is back and so is her brother although they both died in Kansas. Evil cheerleader model types abound like Grayson and Keeley. Laken is struggling to fit into this new world, never once believing she has forgotten this reality and I have to say I was never convinced either. It would have been more believable had she woken up in hospital and the weird disappearance of Casper who remembered her past also seems more than a coincidence. She sets out to find the truth and only wants to get her family back no matter how broken it was. There is a love triangle here with both Wes and Cooper being in love with Laken. I do understand why Laken is drawn to Wes but he is not the same guy she knew and fell in love with in Kansas, his altered personality is a bit creepy especially as he can read her thoughts and seems to be in deep with the Countenance. He doesn't believe her about having another life and tries to convince her she is mistaken. Personally I would go with Cooper who is gorgeous and an all round good guy and believes Laken wholeheartedly. Words like Nephilim and Counts and Celestra lineage is thrown around offering special gifts to those with this bloodline. I felt that there was no real build up to the ending but I would probably buy the next one to see what happened.

35.0% "I am finding this book kind of confusing, was she really in a coma and had this realistic dream about Kansas. Or is something more sinister happening and being in a coma was just a ruse to distract her from the truth?"

DKristin Did you read the Celestra series? If not that may help.

Nereid No I did not read the Celestra series but that is okay as I figured it out. That is the good thing about this site, we all have our own thoughts about what we find appealing in books which is based on our individual perceptions. I did like this book and would buy the next one.
