really liked it
Recommended for: serious readers

This translation is much more dense than the Signet Classics edition, or S. Heaney's recent translation. It's kind of like a difficult wine, you can't simply slurp it down, but if you work with it, lots of dark and interesting flavors.

Beowulf is about 90 pages long, so if you have time, it's fascinating to read this translation alongside a more accessible translation. See how the two translators play with language, make different phrasing decisions. Hear the story in "stereo". I think you'll find it quite memorable. (Email me if you do this!)

Steve I just got through reading Heaney's version (which I liked). But this remains my favorite version.

Peter We'll have to talk about this! Didn't realize you were a Beowulf fan.
