You have to suspend a bit of reality, and sometimes for people it's hard. "But they wouldn't really kill him! They wouldn't!" Well, maybe not, but not the point. Its a purely "what if" story, so any number of things could happen. This is just one of them.
It was fascinating psychologically, especially the personification of the pig-on-a-stick. A very Hobbes mentality here. Maybe that's why I like it, it was dark and creepy.
