McEwan gives the reader two characters in this book that are incredibly real. Most of the story is set in the past, in flashback, as the reader gets to know the just married couple he/she has been introduced to at the beginning of the book. Almost all of the "present" is set on the couple's wedding night. The book is a good lesson about how important communication is--and about how what is not said is often as important as what is not.
