I learned about this book from the movie The Stone Reader, which I highly recommend to people who love to read. I cannot recommend this book similarly because it meanders without focus for far too long. Especially in the middle section which deals with our hero's high school age years. One of the many attempts at the post-WWII great American novel...this one probably would have succeeded better for me if Mossman decided to edit this into two unconnected novels.
