- april and frank vacillate between love and hatred.
- april confesses to not know herself.
- a lack of faith in the lives we've created for ourselves so that you don't know whether it'd be better to proceed or change.
- frank makes himself into an actor to manipulate april.

all the above attributes made the book one of substance speaking to our frailty which is a tender, pitiable and beautiful thing.
