You know how, when you're reading Jane Austen, you just have to embrace that she's having a go at everyone, including you? This is a perfect illustration of that, because: a) My grasp of British history (while quite strong) isn't English. And b) It was written mostly for her family when she was a teenager. Charles Dickens' bit was heavy with sarcasm too. Great Britain used it as a text book for a long time. Ah, how the English love their irony.
