This book by Judith Viorst is a great story to read to children. The book is very easy to relate to because everyone has bad days. In the story, Alexander is having an awful day because everything is going wrong and he is not happy. At the end of the story his mom tells him "some days are like that." This would be a good way to teach students about having a bad day but trying to not let it affect them and to let them know that everyone has days like that and it will all be okay. This is also a great book to use for prediction. Students can try to predict what the next bad thing to happen to Alexander will be and they can also read along on the part where is says "It was a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day." Having students involved in the story and paying attention to the repetition while keep them engaged and eager to read more. At the end of the book, students could have a writing assignment about a bad day that they have had. This could go into their writing journals and the teacher could grade them on how well they write and how much detail.
