This book is about the boyhood of Pulitzer Prize author JR Moehringer. Abandoned by his father early in life, JR and his mother live with her eccentric parents and other mostly fatherless cousins. His uncle works in their Manhasset, NY neighborhood bar and the men who work in and frequent the bar become surrogate fathers as JR searches for male role models. It is well written, but there is a little too much drinking and swearing.
