Strangers in Paradise certainly doesn’t sound like the title of an epic graphic novel series about crime lords, prostitution rings, undercover agents and crooked cops. In fact, from the title you’d think it’s more like a trashy romance novel; it even starts off that way. I read the series in trade paperback form – 6 books containing 106 issues – and the first 3 issues begin the way your typical romance novels might: Katina “Katchoo” Choovanski lives with her best friend Francine Peters, who is in blissful denial about Katchoo’s love for her. Francine is dating Freddie Femurs, another in a long series of assholes who sleep with her and then leave her. Katchoo, heartbroken once again by Francie’s latest rejecton, finds a weird kind of solace in David Qin, the one guy who has ever managed to push past the walls she puts up and to actually be a friend when she needs it most, though he wants a lot more than just friendship.
