A baby fruit bat, Stellaluna, and her mother are attacked by an owl, and Stellaluna is knocked out of her mother's hands. The baby bat then ends up in a bird's nest filled with three baby birds named Pip, Flitter and Flap. The mother bird will let Stellaluna be part of the family only if she eats bugs, does not hang by her feet and sleeps at night. When all the baby animals grow, they learn to fly. When Stellaluna and the birds are out playing, it gets dark and the birds go home without her because they will not be able to see in the dark, however, Stellaluna continues to fly and stops to rest only when her wings start to get tired. While another bat asks her why she is hanging from her toes, and not upside down, Stellaluna begins to explain the story of how her and her mother were seperated, and another bat interrupts, which happens to be her mother.Stellaluna and her mother are reunited and Stellaluna finally understands why she is so different. Excited about learning how to be a bat, Stellaluna returns to her bird family and shares her new experiences and they agree to join Stellaluna and the rest of the bats in a nigh flight. The birds, however, are not able to fly very well at night, and crash and Stellaluna saves them. They decide that even though they are not the same, they are still family. I love the lesson of knowing how to decipher a true family. You may all be different, but if you care about each other, take care of each other, and love each other you are a family.
