I'm sorry, I had to give up on this one. Too much rambling, no plot. It won the Nobel but I guess I'm just one of those stupid American readers that the Nobel committee talks about who don't know what literature should be. I will put it on my read shelf, though, so the review will exist. I have a lovely copy of it if anyone wants to borrow it.

Linda I just finished Soul Mountain and while I liked it, I do find it very atypical as a novel. I can see why some people don't enjoy it, but I thought there were some lovely passages. Also, I want to point out that the Nobel prize is awarded to an author for a body of work, not one book, so it's Gao Xingjian who won, not Soul Mountain. He had written quite a lot before this, including plays, criticism, etc.
