Every since I was very young I have been enchanted by mermaids so when I stumbled across Wrecked at the book store I was super excited to read it, despite its poor reviews. I'm sorry to say that I have to agree with the majority of the negative reviews found on Goodreads. I really hate giving a bad review but this book was verging on a disaster. I would hardly call Wrecked a mermaid novel. At first it read like a reversal of The Little Mermaid; boy "mermaid" saves girl, sea witch makes a bargain with him, boy falls in love. The mermaid aspect of the story was pathetic, you never learned more about Down Below or the whatever race of "mermaid" Christian was. He didn't even have a tail which was extremely disappointing. Majority of the story was about the main character, Miranda, complaining about how badly her life sucks and how the whole town hated her. It was so melodramatic and the whole mermaid aspect was overshadowed by Miranda's whining. The ending of the novel was very weak, it felt like the author wanted to finish writing the book as quickly as I wanted to stop reading it. Also there were a ton of grammatical errors. For me to notice grammatical errors is a big deal because normally I don't pick them up.
I'm sorry to say that I was not captivated by this novel. It was seriously lacking mermaid-ness, the beginning was full of info dumping about Miranda, the middle was full of Miranda sulking, and the end was completely rushed and seemed very incomplete. I would say save your money and if you really want to read this book borrow it from a friend or pick it up from your local library.
