I am almost embarrassed to admit how much I enjoy Mercedes Lackey's books. The plots are usually rather simple, and the stories aren't terribly layered, but still I love her writing. No one does character development the way she does.
In "Joust" she holds true to her poignant sense of humanity. She doesn't pull her punches. You feel what the characters are feeling. You mourn and revel as the characters do. And, as always, the characters aren't only human.
There is far less magic in this book than others of hers. But still it works beautifully.
