really liked it
Read in September, 2012

I was keen to read a Robotham thriller, I'd heard so many praises of his writing. Delved straight into this one. Now I must say, I did NOT enjoy the first third of the book. I almost put it down and would have rated it poorly. There was a lot of poignant flashbacks reminiscing about a sweet old aunt that's been dead for a lot of years (why should I care?). The main character was under suspicion for murder and he was so unlikeable as a protagonist I was really hoping he would turn out to be the murderer.

But then the pace picked up (finally!). And I have to say the last part of the book seemed to be thriller writing at its best. The protagonist hit the lowest of lows and danger was behind every turn. The book went from a 2 star rating to a 5. I've settled on a 4 (or 3.5) when averaged. I'll definitely read another Robotham, glad I persevered.
