Terran Ok, I need to hear more about your read of this book. Susan and I loved this, so I'm curious about your take on it.

Kiri I remember that some of the concepts were fun, and especially the Mars terraforming angle (clever :) ). But overall I wasn't blown away -- maybe the book was over-hyped before I picked it up.

Consulting my notes, apparently it was the not-so-hot characterization that mainly left me a little so-so on the book: "There are lives and loves, but although the characters are distinct they do not grip me as people real enough to make me really care about their lives. The physically wasting genius was better-done with Bean (Ender's Shadow series, by Orson Scott Card) or Orlando Gardiner (Otherland, by Tad Williams). The main character is a waffly, emotionally remote sort who is probably deliberately hard to empathize with." Not the kind of book I tend to fall in love with. Nod appreciatively from afar, perhaps. Hence, 3 stars.
