Tadeusz Borowski's This Way for the Gas, Ladies and Gentlemen describes the author's actual experiences in Auschwitz. This collection of short stories is both belongs to a genre of fiction I would call in extremis. It is the fictional counterpart to nonfiction works such as Elie Wiesel's Night, and Viktor Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning. Borowski's work rings with authenticity - not only about one of the darkest chapters of human history, but also about the ways people caught in a nightmarish reality respond to the nightmare. If for no other reason, read this book to further understand the horrors of totalitarianism and to further cherish what it means to live in freedom.
