This book is in the "beautiful" category for its subject matter and the way in which the story is told. The book was originally written in German, but the English translation well captures the nuances of emotion in the description of the feelings of post-war Germany about the holocaust. The story lacks action and doesn't linger on the atrocities, but poses many ethical and moral questions about the era. It's about a 15 year old boy who begins an "affair" with a mysterious woman. Central to the affair is his reading to her, which becomes the ongoing theme of the story. A short, but very satisfying read.
