This is one of my favourite books of all time. I love the plot, love the writing, love everything about it. The story revolves around two people who live in the same city and actually know people in common but don't meet until the middle of the book. This is not a bad thing. At the beginning of the book the two protagonists are just muddling along in their own lives, reflecting (or avoiding thinking about) their poor choices in relationships, immersing themselves in their work (she's an academic at a folklore centre, he hosts an overnight radio show). Carol Shields is a genius of characterization. Beautiful, beautiful book.
