A good middle grades adventure story. Some fun sly humor for older readers as well and while most of the mythological content is pretty basic, there are a couple of interesting twists. The only real criticism I had was that it seems to rely too heavily for my comfort on gender stereotypes at times (the angelic mother, the smart but not esp. physical girl companion, the struggle for dominance among adolescent males, the importance of being claimed by a father figure). Still, that probably comes with the territory of incorporating Western mythology into the story. I also think the author lays it on a bit thick about the role of "the heart of Western Civilization" as the center of human survival. But, my 12 year old daughter loved it and for myself, I liked it well enough to read more .
