bookshelves: history, put-aside-temporarily, to-read

Just received this book for Christmas and have read only 30 pogs or so, but I'm hooked. Ross is a wonderful writer, mixing biography, history and criticism in a seamless narrative that reminds one why Plato warned that "music finds its way into the secret places of the soul." A compelling read so far.
