This much-hyped techno-thriller was perfectly adequate, but I think I'm being generous in giving it three stars.

Days before the ominous date of 12/21/12 (the end of the Mayan Long Count Calendar), a dreaded and unstoppable disease emerges from the Guatemalan jungle. At the same time (coincidentally?) an ancient Mayan codex is discovered, which seems to be written by a scribe who wasn't completely enthralled with his king. Thinking the codex might hold the key to the disease's cure, a team of researchers tries to interpret the ancient writing before the disease kills everybody on earth.

This is the sort of book where plot is everything (which is what I was looking for when I picked it up) but the plot didn't really grab me. It was like Michael Crichton lite, with lots of clues that led nowhere and lots of superfluous characters. And lots of suspension of disbelief required.
