Simple enough that I could read it (all 1300 pages) with my kids when they were 6 and 8, rich enough that I can read it by myself and not want to put it down. It is so deceptively simple at the start...and then it gets scary and complex...just like life! It's a great mix of character and conflict and fantasy and some very strange strangers in a very strange land. Now my younger daughter (now 8) picks it up and reads 100 pages before bed, and laughs at the silly rat-creatures -- complete with the accents we invented for them -- all by herself.
