What is essentially a story about the life of a man named Abel - his time prior to, in and after the Civil War - is told in beautifully lyrical language that leaves a fairly deep impression after the book is done. Weller's writing style put me off at first as it seemed Weller was working too hard on the language and not enough on the plot. After a few dozen pages things began to click and I found myself really captured. Weller's description of Abel's love of his dog really captures the love between man and dog. The scene of Abel's witnessing of the passing of Lincoln's cortege was so moving that I had to stop reading for a bit and just contemplate what I had just read. I hope Weller has more like this in him.
