" it ever really possible to retrieve what you've left behind?" Esther wondered when she was young and her mother still called her Helene to hide that she was Jewish because it was World War II and she wanted her daughter safe. They packed a single suitcase each and fled into the hills, toward Italy, toward Jerusalem.
This is a story about displacement and loss. Not just that of Esther and her mother and the thousands of other people on the same path they followed through a hostile Europe, but also of Nejma, the young Arab girl who is similarly forced to flee her home at the moment Esther is arriving in the newly formed and conflicted state of Israel.
