There seemed to be a lot of set-up in this book. Jason and his family moved across the country from Michigan to Malibu Beach, California. They move into the exclusive gated community of DeVere Heights, which also seems to divide the high school groups. More set-up comes from Jason's first friend Alex, who does not live in DeVere, and his developing friendships with swim teammates and fellow DeVere residents. Mysterious things happen at some of the DeVere parties, becoming very mysterious when one local girl ends up dead. Alex seems to think that some of the DeVere residents may be vampires...could this be true?

Most of the book leads up to about 5 or so chapters at the end with the resolution of what is really going on in DeVere Heights. I felt that this was too quick of a resolution, but this book is also the first in a series, which may be why so much of this book is spent setting the scene.
