A book about a survivor. Written with humor and a perspective that blends the adult perspective with the child's perspective. Walls lived a childhood that no one could consider normal - yet, as a child, it was normal to her. The tenderness that she maintains toward her parents is quite astounding, where anger would seem to have natural reign. These parents placed their children in unbelievable circumstances that would make you tremble with rage in any other storytelling voice. Walls succeeds in helping the reader endure the story because of her present resolution.
