I like the way this book is starting..... OK , so I'm finished now. I really, really loved this book. It was like the Matrix without a constant war and all that fighting. I saw someone else's review about the book cover. Interestingly, I read the book with the big red letters and the two white women on the cover. I did not know that the main character was black. I assumed she was the white lady on the cover. So, a quarter the way through the book I realize that she is black. Also, realize that all the characters are of color to that point. I was talking to my sister about, she read the book first. We came to the decision it was that during a very prejudice time and she needed to get her books sold. I just saw the other cover in on this web site.... WoW! I love that cover it is so artsy....

Anyway, I really recommend folks to read this book because it makes you think outside of the box. Also, it really shows the consistency of human tendencies...

Oh, and the way that the aliens talk about humans reminds me of the way The Doctor talks about humans in "Doctor Who"...

Definitely there are characters of color, including Lilith - but are ALL the humans non-white? That's not the impression I got.

Hi There Andrea, you are so right. I think the thing that got me was the book cover version of the book I read. The 1987 version. http://www.ebay.com/itm/DAWN-Octavia-...

So, I actually had preconceived images in my head about what the characters looked like. And when I picked up the book I knew nothing of Octavia Butler other than she was a good author. I was thinking of someone like Ursula LeGuin. I'm glad you made that point about my review.I didn't want it to sound negative. It was just surprising to me because the cover was actually nothing like the book.
