really liked it

A highly atmospheric mystery with an appealing investigator, Chief Inspector Armand Gamache. The characters and the setting are drawn with vivid strokes. I suspected that this might be a first novel (it is), but the moments that made me think so are few and the moments that made me laugh aloud or otherwise filled me with appreciation are many. An excellent first outing from an author of whom I hope to see more.
