This has always been a favorite series of mine and is one of the very few that I still have in paperback. I decided to revisit the series after many years.

I do still love the story--it has a great hook at the beginning as the main character, Corwin, wakes up with amnesia and has to discover, along with the reader, who he is and what is going on. I still love the idea of the trump cards, allowing movement across the Shadow Realms (all worlds, including ours) and the idea of Amber, the one "true" world.

What I didn't like was the dialogue that would be going along quite normally when suddenly 70's slang would appear. It was totally jarring and very distracting. I'm hoping to not see so much of that in the next books. Also, the book is very short and all the action seems to move too quickly.

So, while not quite the perfect read I remember, I am still looking forward to the rest of the series.
