Creepy. Very creepy. I'm not sure why I've never really read Lovecraft before, since I always loved Poe and stuff like that when I was a kid, but after a lot of harassment from my son, I finally plowed through this collection, which I had actually bought a couple of years ago. Reading Lovecraft is a bit of a commitment I would say, because his prose is dense and sometimes quite technical, but the payoff is well worth the effort. Each of these stories has its own special brand of weirdness and horror, and Lovecraft is really a master at building suspense, even when you kind of know what's coming... more or less. And quite often, when I thought I knew what was coming, the climactic moment was still a bit of a surprise!

The Cthulhu mythology, of course, is legendary and awesome. The Cthulhu stories never fail to terrify. But I actually found a few of the other stories which weren't conclusively connected to the mythology to be even creepier, most notably Winged Death, The Thing on the Doorstep, In the Walls of Eryx (surprisingly set on Venus!), The Colour Out of Space, and The Dreams in the Witch House. There were a few times when I gasped out loud because something that happened was so totally unexpected and horrible. This isn't something I do very often while reading!

I'm taking a Lovecraft break right now, but have already taken another collection out of the library.

Andrew Does it involve creatures from the dark abysses of other non-euclidean dimensions?

Bill quite possibly. i went out to sit on the porch and start reading the first story, Call of Cthulhu. after a few minutes, i started hearing cracking noises and other strange noises in different parts of the woods, and Abby started making her freaky low growling noise. shortly thereafter, i got up and went inside...
