Season of Surrender was totally fabulous, funny and sexy historical romance by Theresa Romain. She writes witty, intelligent, and thoughtful prose. I really enjoyed the characters in the story. It includes a handsome, rich and rakish Alexander Edgeware, Lord Xavier. He is reported to be a libertine who makes wagers on anything which the ton loves. He then makes a bet with his cousin to persuade a proper your miss to attend his naughty Christmas house party for a two week period. Even though it would be ruinous for the lady to go. So Lord Xavier chooses the oh so proper and virginal Louisa Oliver. She is a bluestocking sort of woman who is smart, funny and charming. Louisa was once in a kind of scandal involving her ex fiancée’ who married her half sister and the ton never forgot. (Someone had fed the gossip to the newspaper about what happened) But now Louisa is tired to feeling like a dried up old maid and takes matters by the hand. When Lord Xavier meets the woman he’s to wager on, the challenge to protect her is on his agenda. During the house party, Louisa sees the real Alex that hides behind a ducal façade. She feels the task of uncovering the true man will be a test of trust and love. Can two people really show that there is more to them than speculation and regret? Thank you Ms Romain for such a great read. I received this early digital arc by net galley for an honest review.
