3.5 stars.

This isn't something I'd have chosen to read on my own (I was given it to review), and I really didn't much care for the religious overtones that saturated the whole story. But I did like how richly detailed the settings were, and I thought the character development was exceptional. Even secondary characters felt fully fleshed out. The plot did drag a bit at times, but always picked back up. Also, I would have liked a bit more relationship development between Elisa and Humbarto before Humbarto's untimely demise.

Not sure if I'll read the other books in this planned trilogy, but I would recommend it to a girl looking for a book with strong female characters.
