This is the 2nd Inspector Rutledge Mystery. These mysteries are set just after World War I where Inspector Rutledge served in the front lines. The horrors of war are not quite as fresh as in the first book but Rutledge's shell shock delusion, Hammish, is still very active in Rutledge's mind, often with caustic quips that hint at the solution to the mystery.

Wings of Fire is a nicely layered look into a family seemingly beset by a many accidental deaths and suicides. Are one or more of them murder?
