Ian Carl 'The Emperor's Knife' was well written and all around a decent book. I felt Williams did well introducing and building the characters, as well as the world they lived in. Sarmin and Mesema as characters had enough growth that I felt connected to them. I would have like to have seen Sarmin's and Mesema's abilities used more.

The plot was interesting. I liked the concept of a pattern connecting the Many and their use of skills from anyone patterned. It gave them, as an enemy, a scale which made it appear difficult to fight against. I wanted Williams to show more of this though. It was introduced in a couple parts, but I thought it could have been built upon and used to a greater extent.

Overall, I did feel the story ran a little slow till the end. For being indicated as the first book in a trilogy, I thought the end was actually rather conclusive and didn't leave me hanging, wanting to get to the second book. I wasn't able to see where the story were the story would lead.

I would go more in depth, but it has been a while since I read The Emperor's Knife. I've gotten through probably another dozen books since finishing. Since the story didn't grab me as greatly as other books I've read, it hasn't stayed with me.
