I feel like a cheat when I read poems in translation. I am sure there is so much I am missing. But I am unlikely to learn Polish anytime soon, and these poems are so good in translation, the translators must have done an admirable job. Reading the book is worth the feeling of being a cheat then.

Szymborska's poems excel at the recognizable feelings of ordinary life, common experiences I did not even realize I had until reading her poem. She tends to write with a twist at the end; a final line or two that changes the meaning of the poem, or adds a wry twist. I kept waiting for this device to get old; it is a testament to her skill that it never did.
