Daphne du Maurier's modern Gothic holds up very well - I first read it in the early 1970s. It's one of those novels in which a character is seen only through the eyes of other characters, for Rebecca has been dead eight months at the start of the novel. It gets off to a slow start but the pace picks up about a third of the way through, though I felt the second half could actually have used a bit of tightening.
