Hmmm, Fools Crow is your typical Native American story where the Native's are struggling to maintain their way of life as it is being threatened more and more by the white settlers. It takes a hard literary edge, but the characters and setting and the plot are all well thought out and interesting. I will never forget the character Yellow Kidney. The only downside to this book is that James Welch has a poetic style that can be hard to grasp at times. I give him an A for the beauty of his use of language, but I'd have to give him a C when it comes to compatibility with my miniscule brain.
