It is easy to see why Ambler was so popular in the 30s and 40s. He writes very well, he is economical and direct and he allows his characters to reflect on their circumstances. This is a very straightforward thriller, well executed, but its setting means that there is little in the way of interesting period detail (which provide much incidental pleasure in reading books from this era).
