Shadow of the Past has a few things going for it. Cleveland knows how to create a mood, and the characterizations are good. The story works toward an interesting and well-thought-out conclusion. The scenes with the Shadow Man are well-played. Pleasantly unpleasant.

My biggest gripe here is with some of the verbal excess in the book, by which I mean some of the scenes go on far too long, with some redundancies. A great deal of interaction between Mark and Christine is repetitive, and pushes Mark's character from slightly downbeat and quirky nerd-type to annoyingly self-focused loner who the reader has trouble connecting with.

Cleveland is clearly someone who knows how to put a book together, and I'm looking forward to reading future efforts.
