Author Presentation
Enna Burning is Shannon Hale's companion novel to The Goose Girl. Enna's brother Leifer discovers the language of fire, a powerful and consuming knowledge. When Bayern goes to war, Enna decides to learn the fire language to try and help her country, but the power is more than she expected it to be and she fights to keep control of her gift and herself.
I found the first half of the novel slow and sometimes repetitive. By Part 3, it picks up pace and the stakes have piled up high for Enna and Bayern, making the novel much more exciting. I enjoyed reading of familiar characters, as well as new ones that I found fascinating. The struggle that Enna has to achieve balance and remain free from the addictive behavior of the fire language was enticing and rung true of much of our human nature. Young adults of all ages would enjoy a read like this.
