** spoiler alert ** It was shocking in parts, and I can see why it's been so successful (both as a book and movie) although I have to admit that it dragged on in parts. Once I learned that Nick got out alive, I sort of just sat there, waiting for him to talk about his escape. And it seemed like the events leading up to that were sort of dull and slow (whether due to the writing or my own expectations, I can't be sure).

It's definitely entertaining enough to read, and it really opens up your eyes to the plight of Africa, and also what it's like in an oppressive regime. You can understand why Nick stuck around so long, and how he was compelled to help Amin, despite the atrocities he and his soldiers committed. Surprise ending too, although I kind of saw it coming. ;]
