Emma Straub's prose is strong, but on the whole the stories here felt flat to me. There was a lot of implied gravitas that I wasn't sure was earned. The stories tended to be women gently constrained by domesticity, and they tended to end with a limp atmospheric sense of potential escape. I never really felt invested in any of them. I'm reading her debut novel now, though, and so far it's quite strong. Maybe Other People We Married was just her clearing her throat.
