Beautifully written debut novel from a member of the conservative, fundamentalist Lutheran sect of Laestadianism. It’s about faith, and about choice—whether to leave the faith or, perhaps more difficult, whether to stay. Each chapter takes the perspective of a different member of the large Rovaniemi family, who struggle with huge issues of love, forgiveness, and life in the modern world. Almost terse prose, with dark Finnish allure.
