it was amazing
Read in November, 1984

This is really as good as its reputation. Is it flawed? Yes. Do contemporary tastes run to more character and action driven directions? Yes. Was Neil Postman correct in concluding that Huxley's vision eventually appeared, while Orwell's didn't? Yes. And yet "Big Brother" and "Double Speak" have entered our lexicon. There is so much about freedom and oppression explored within these pages.

As a teacher, I love that reading and WRITING are among the most transgressive behaviors. How I wish that more people who mention "Big Brother" would actually read this complex, provocative book.

Erin Would you teach this to ALM 8th graders?

Terry Hmmm...probably not. It is just stiff and formal for that age, heavily driven by themes and style, not by character and plot. And there are the two sex scenes and the brief discussion of menstruation. Have you looked at other dystopias? "The Giver" is obvious, but there are literally dozens of others.

"Hunger Games"
"Little Brother" - beware the sex scene
"Adoration of Jenna Fox"
