really liked it

Though technically a fiction, this book is essentially a memoir of Valentino Achak Deng, a Sudanese boy/man, and all the hardships he suffered in Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, and United States. Though he goes through a lot of shit--which does make the book depressing at times--there are also moments of joy, lightness (loved the tampon story!), and persistent hope which keep it well balanced overall. What really came across for me was Valentino's honesty in portraying both the good and bad aspects of Africa and it's people, as well as United States and Americans. It's also a good basic source for those who don't know much about the Sudanese conflict. My only criticism is that at times I found it a bit long and wish the editors would have done a better job.
